Lake Pepin fishing report 8/7

Rain showers and a walleye chop- what more could a guy ask for. Spent a great day on Pepin in search for a few eaters and maybe a trophy to boot. Perfect day for fishing with a nice breeze and enough rian to keep the yachts docked.

A week prior myself and Leinieman found some nice eaters trolling the flats. I wanted to see if that pattern was still on. Although the numbers were down from last week, the quality made up for it. The first picure is Bob R. with an eye that taped in at close to 24". Running livebait rigs in and around 13ft provide most of the action. Speed at or around 1 mph worked the best for the day. We were running both leeches and crawlers, crawlers were the preference today. The action did not stay consisant all day. We would have flurries of fast paced action and then go cold. It was best to hit a spot, pull a couple of fish and then move on. The 23" in the second photo hit on a leech.

We did manage a couple of eaters and a few bonus crappies for the day. Besides running the livebait rigs we also pulled cranks. The action was fast and furious on cranks but it was all sheepies!

For some nice quality eyes,Give livebait rigging a try next time out on the lake. See you on the water, Don.

  1. Great update from last weeks action. I was wondering myself if those fish were still hanging on the flats. Were you trolling lead core and was the hammered gold spinner the way to go? Thanks for the update. Steve

  2. Steve, The fish were not in the same area as last week. Live bait rigs by far was the best way to go. Seems the spinners were a one day wonder!

  3. Don, Don’t tell him that! I have to fish with him this weekend and I want his mind in the right”State”. He may go nut’s if you tell him you were catching Wisc. fish!!!!

Hey Gator, they all were Wisconsin eyes!

Thanks Don. I’m pretty sure I know where you were. You didn’t have much luck on cranks, huh?
Are you fishing Saturday in the frontenac deal?

By the way, I thought sheepsheads were the Wisconsin walleye.

  5. Yep, I am Fishing the tourney on Saturday. See you guys Friday night. Oh the about 50 or so sheepies on cranks, thats it nothing else touched a crank!

  6. Hi Don,
Paul Follmer pre-fishing partner from Big Stone RCL. Thank You for the great report were you pulling long or short leaders, was hook color a option to look at?

Good Luck this weekend and keep a tight line
    Paul Follmer

  7. Hello Paul, good questions. I use leaders no shorter than 7ft, usually 7 to 10ft. Red hooks have been my best color as of late. If red is not going I will use a size 10 bronze aberdeen style hook.
