Lake Menomin & Tainter Report 7/28

Well it has been a couple of weeks since I reported on the local lakes. I wish I had better news for you this week. I have split the week between Menomin and Tainter and the bite is slow right now on both. The algae bloom and warmer temps usually gets the crank bite going but it is not to be.

I have been picking up a few fish on Menomin trolling both cranks and spinners. Small walleyes and smallies have provide the most action. The preference of cranks changes daily, even hourly! The best thing to do is keep swiching up colors and sizes often. Northland fishscale spinners with green beads have been constant throughout the week. Leeches are working better than crawlers. Depths between 8 and 15ft have been my target areas, also the contours of the river channel.

The action is still on the slow side on tainter although the size of fish is better. Trolling rattlin Raps put the most fish in the boat. Chartreuse took almost all the fish today. Covering the main lake flats around any type of structure is key. Both the upper and lower lake are holding fish. 8ft was a key depth today. Fair sized pike, smallies and a few crappies hit the cranks today. I did not have any action on spinners. Trolling between 1.2 and 2mph triggered the most bites.

Not fast action but you can still go out and scrounge a few fish. A good weekend to introduce someone to the sport of angling. Good luck and I will see you on the water.
