Devils Lake Fishing Report – Week of July 19, 2004

Right now the fishing on Devils Lake is incredible. We are having 100 walleye days right now. Mix in an almost equal number of white bass a dozen pike and boy are my arms tired! The amazing thing is that between myself and a couple of other guides, the angler activity on the Flats is almost zero. Where are you?

Unfortunatly the photos I have taken are of poor quality these past two weeks. They have been over exposed or someone eyes are closed or whatever. So no photos. I’m still pitching shad raps into shallow water and having a bonanza on walleyes and whitebass. I have a feeling the white bass have left the area I’m in but the walleyes are still there. The bigger walleyes are mixed in with the smaller fish. There are so many there that it seems like all you do is catch small fish but at then end of the day you may have caught a dozen over 20 inches. I’ve also had days of over 20 white bass between 17 and 19 inches,

When I tire from pitching shad raps, I’ll anchor and slipbobber leeches in 10 foot of water. The action for walleyes is the same. When I’m alone I can hardly fish two rods when they really turn on. How will this last?

  1. The fishing out there would have to be world class right now with the number of guys getting busted with 100 – 200+ white bass over their limits after one day fishing. I read all your posts on that in the Devils Lake forum and I was torn between being mad as heck about the poaching and impressed by the quality of the fishing. Are they getting those guys under control through extra enforcement? Hope so.

  2. The overlimit thing in most cases is a cary-over from the no-limit days. I’m hoping that they didn’t check the reg’s and it isn’t a wide spread issue. Most of the times such things are crimes of oppurtunity. As you know with fishing, you can’t plan to over-limit. Most folks can’t even get a limit. The Game and Fish is working with MN DNR to get the word out.

The white bass bonanaza was fun while it lasted. Three pound plus whities are fun. They’re hell on cranks and hooks.
