Walleye fishing on Green Bays Western Shore

With a large amount of Green Bay still having ice cover there are areas in the lower Bay and along the southwest shore that have some open water areas. Tuesday had strong Northwest winds that pushed a lot of ice toward the eastern shore which opened some water along the southwest shore but with changing wind direction from the north to northeast will easily move back to the west.

With most of the water still being cold in most places we were looking for areas with darker warmer water which we were able to find and we also found active walleyes in these areas. The water depths we were fishing were 6 to 10 Feet of Water and we found both pre and post spawn fish here that were moving to and from where they spawn.

We were casting for these fish using VMC hair jigs along with Rapala lipless crankbaits and found our brighter colors to be better in this dirtier water. We were casting these baits using Sufix 832 braid in 6lb test which really helped us feel the bites. Most of the fish we caught were from 19 to 24 inches but we had a number of fish that were 26 inches or better with our largest being 29 inches that was post spawn and a 28 inch fish that was pre-spawn.

As the spring progresses and the ice melts and the water begins to warm there will be lots of opportunities and areas that will have very hungry post spawn fish that will respond to many different techniques whether it is casting or trolling. I apologize for not having any pics but we all know what they look like. Be safe and good fishing.
