I had a chnce to do a little fishing closer to home this past weekend, about 20 miles down river from Gavin’s Point Dam. Joining me on this trip were my Father Joe and my son Brendan. What else could a guy ask for besides fishing with his dad and son on a beautiful Missouri River evening?
The first picture is my father, Joe with a 16.5-inch walleye. Our presentation today was very simple. We were simply rigging night crawlers on a plain hook with 3/4 ounce weight about 3-feet of leader. We fished right on the bottom, hoping to find a variety of species. Our depth was about 8 or 9 feet, fishing a cut bank where the current broke a bit due to an upstream sandbar.
This second photo is my son Brendan with a nice Sturgeon. In this photo you can see the simplicity of our presentation. We used Berkley Lighting Rods due to their ability to detect light bites. Brendan has never caught one until now so he was pretty interested in this new species. We were also able to catch a few channel cat and drum (sheep head) in this same location. On this part of the Missouri River you never know what might be on the other end of your line. It sure makes for a fun fishing trip for any angler.
Finally, remember that some Sturgeon are endangered. We release all that we catch but some species are illegal to have in possession. Be sure you know your fish. For more information on Sturgeon, try this link:
