Lake Pepin Walleye Report

With the smell of fish in the air I knew this weekend we were going to have a challenge and change strategies. This weekend was another good weekend to be on the water and I guess that’s why everyone and their brother were out there cruising the river.

The fishing on Lake this weekend for me dipped a little. Thursday and Friday started out with a huge may fly hatch. When that happens I usually totally adjust my program on the lake trying to find quality fish. With those few adjustments we were able to muster up some nice quality fish over the weekend. We did not have the numbers but the size surely made up for it.

This first picture is Charlie from South Dakota. Needless to say, this was his biggest walleye ever. At the age of 17 I am sure this won’t be his last. This walleye was just huge. I hadn’t seen a walleye like this, during the middle of the summer, in a long time. With a couple of pictures this walleye went back under his decisions. Nice Job!

Most of my time this weekend was still on the lake. However, I did make it down into the lower end of the river for a while. Funneling areas with rip rap and sand flats have been my go to spots yet. Lead core and long lining cranks put most of the number in the boat this week, BUT!, the biggest came on live bait and some special bait, provided by Hooked on Fishing in Rochester, and a lindy rig.

This next picture is Todd Poeschel of Mondovi, Wi. This was his first walleye ever. He landed this with me while trolling sand flats on Lake.

Too top the entire week I got to do something I hadn’t done in six years. I got to take the Battle-Axe fishing…oops, I mean my drop dead gorgeous super model looking wife of mine. I hope she doesn’t read this. LOL! This was something I was just ecstatic about doing. With two young kids it has been hard being able to get out in the boat like we use too before kids. This was time spent well and I hope we get to do this more. Well, just as long as she doesn’t show me up.

This last picture is Carl Kuehn, of HiMec, Inc. of Rochester. He and his wife spent the day in the boat with me on Sunday. All I can say is I am not the sheep head king. Thanks guys I had a blast with you. Hope to do it again this fall.

  1. I didn’t see the pic’s either. I know Todd he went to high school with me. I haven’t hit the lake lately. I plan on hitting it this week sometime. Thanks for the awesome report!!

  2. Sorry I don’t know what I did with the pictures. I finally got them fixed.

Also if anyone is looking for new boat this boat will be available come the end of the fishing season. Those serious interested parties can contact me through email or PM.

  4. Super fish jarrad that fish is really big..looks like a solid ten pounder i would guess..whats this special bait you mentioned, did you catch the big fish on it..

  5. I never weighed the fish. Since he wanted to realese it we snapped a picture and put her back. I am guessing well over 10#’s. Special bait?? You will have to ask Mike at Hooked on Fishing in Rochester.

  6. Flick – Sitting in Brazil @ 6000 miles away, all that I can say is we have it pretty good on the Ole Upper Miss. That fish looks a lot bigger then it did when you netted it.. That spot will just have to be our secert.. The wifey, kid and I had a pretty good day as well after we left you, but no piggies..

See you at the GMO meeting – I hope??
