Pool 4 Wabasha Report Mississippi River

Well with the water rising, Mike and I opted to fish the Wabasha area all week end. Also Mike got a New Hat he wanted to show off.. What do you think? Nice Hat Mike.

We checked some spots down river that are good high water areas. Our best luck on Saturday was to cast cranks onto the wingdams. We caught a nice limit of eyes nothing over 19 inches. However we did Boat some awesome Small and large mouth bass. With this technique.

Here is Mike with a couple of eyes.

With the warmer water and the huge volume of boaters. Mike and I thought it would be fun to do the weekend with Hair and cranks. OH!!! You mean NO live bait. Yes "No Live Bait. We boated over 50 fish each day without live bait.

Cranks and Hair were the weapons of choice.

Fish ranged from walleye, sauger, smallies, Largemouth, sheephead, catfish, crappies, sunfish, rockbass, strippers, and redhorse ))

Hear is Mike with another Smiling Sheepie.

Sunday we started early and wanted to get a meal of crappies? Hopefull that the river would give up a half a dozen eaters. The mighty Mississippi Blessed us with a very nice meal. Mike thanks for catching dinner.

We caught all these on hair jigs pitched to rock and vertically popped back to the boat.

Mike said I could post one picture..Well the only one he took of me this weekend was with this Green grass Carp..

I popped this dandy on a closing dam with a crank bait a number 5 jointed crawdad. All the big bass we caught this weekend were spiting up crawdads.. And I might add all these fish were feeding heavily, cause they had great fat bellies…Jeez I love this fishery it is by far the best in the Midwest..

Hope everyone had a safe and successful weekend.

This end of the world is very congested with heavy boat traffic so be courteous and play safe..

Remember watch out for the little guy.

Speed kills and boats do not have brakes.

See you on the water.

Hey James! The new hats are Fantastic! Good job to all involved in getting it done.

When I'm not fishing or working I'm looking for nitecrawlers...and Tournament Angler for the past 20 plus years.

  1. I see you and the Walleye Master must have grabbed a couple hats from Mike @ Hooked on Fishing? I love the way they turned out… glad to here you like them.

Super report. You figure the panfishing will go nutz like they did last summer once the water levels drop out?

  2. I don’t think we are going to see water levels as low as last year..
The crappies are not as stacked in the main channel as they are in low water.
I also have not found any of the big bull sunfish like we did last year in low water.
They must all still be back in the side channels and backwaters.
Oh well I’ll have to chase walleye and Green grass carp
The hats did come out very nice…good colors…comfortable to wear even in this hot weather.
See you guys on the 31st..

  3. Greg, you were “Wiser” than use with the “No Live Bait”. We fished Wabasha from 0530-0800 (Sat. Morning) with Cats, Crawlers, Leeches, and couldn’t buy a fish. We switched to trolling Grapplers, Shad Raps, Walleye Divers, and had a ball. 23″ was the biggest, but every other fish we caught was a perfect 15″-18″.

  4. Sounds like you had a good weekend. good job.
Hands down my favorite way to fish is with a jig. Bucktail is my favorite type..then you try and make the fish think it is alive…Wham fish on… It’s that simple.
If the bite goes vertical look out I’m in heaven..
I have been schooling Mike on this for the last two summers and he is becoming a great fisherman..Next year I’ll have to let him run the troller…
Take care see you on the water…
