A new plastic from Chompers called the Techno-tube may be the hottest thing going this summer–at least on the lower Wisconsin River and a couple of lakes I guide on in northern Illinois
This new bait looks like a cross between the Chompers skirted grub and a tube–with considerably more ‘beef’ in the body, and a fall something like a senko
Blue/black and punkinseed are great colors on the lower Wisconsin. Caught pike, walleyes, stripers, a sheepie and lots of smallies yesterday upstream from Portage while filming a segment for Midwest Outdoors. Biggest was a respectable 19 inch smallie
Fish on the lower Wisconsin river are relating heavily to wood and trailing edge of sandbars on main channel in typical summer pattern, however recent high water has moved the bottom of this sand-bottomed river around, filling in many of the old holes…and creating new ones.
Launch at Pine island just outside of Portage and head upstream. A jet drive outboard is ideal. Ron Barefield is great guide on this section of river, he runs a jet ph. 608-838-8756, email [email protected].
Going upstream is a good idea due to all the shifting sand. If you don’t have a jet drive, a cartopper is a good idea. The only thing worse than being upstream without a paddle is getting stuck downstream on a river of sand!
