Bass Fishing in the Brainerd Area!

Fisherman are getting mixed results lately. The walleye fishing is slow but the bass bite is on fire. Choose your favorite technique and just about any lake and you should catch some bass. Some of our favorite baits lately are Spinnerbaits, Plastic worms, Rapalas, or Scum Frogs. Live bait has also worked well. Good results have come from using leeches, fatheads or small sucker minnows. Bass have been hitting throughout the day. We have found nice bass on the weed edges in 10-16 feet. It is not uncommon to catch 20, 30, even 50 bass in one day. That’s how great the fishing has been. The pike fishing is getting better. Anglers have done well using bobbers and big sucker minnows right along the weedline. Wilson bay on Gull has been good for Northerns. Another bright spot has been the sunfish bite. Big sunfish are hitting wax worms or small leeches in 6-9 feet. Our crappie fishing is picking up as well. For some crappie action check out, Upper Mission, Lake Hubert, or Upper Gull. Puddle Jumpers or small tube jigs are the ticket right now.

With all this heat and humidity watch for the Pike, Bass and Crappies to be on the prowl. This type of weather always seems to spur the activity level. Good Luck this week!

  1. I was out on the Whitefish Chain this morning. The bass are fairly aggressive. I did best using Mushroom jigs tipped with Berkley 7 ” Turtleback worms. I caught some fish cranking Rattlin Rapalas but the fish seemed to want a slower presentation. The weedgrowth seems a little sporadic but the fish are still there. Some weedlines held fish while others did not. An underwater camera like an Aqua-Vu really helped out. The weedlines are out to about 15 feet. Most of the bass I’ve been catching have been in 8-13 feet up on the flats. There were also some smaller fish under the boat docks. Overall a great morning with lots of action.

  2. Jason,

The word was the weedlines on Whitefish were almost non-existant earlier this year. Do you thing their finally startint to grow with some warmer weather?

  3. Hi Riverfan, In some places the weeds are very full but I believe they haven’t reached as deep as normal. The weeds were out to about 14-15 feet. Normally they grow out to 17-18 feet in some areas. They are starting to grow pretty good now.
