Mille Lacs Lake smallmouth report 7-5-04

The smallmouth action has really picked up with the warmer temperatures last week. I have been finding active fish on most all rocky structures in the 3-7 foot areas. Jigs and plastics have been the hot ticket!

I have been casting B-Fish-N Tackles H20 jigs tipped with either a brite colored Ringworm or K-Grub. The gold shine color has been good, as has the Chameleon orange tail in the ringworm. I have also caught a few fish on a #3 Mepps white buck tail. The bass have been schooling in the shallows on the warm sunny days. Last week I had three bass go after my jig at the smar time! What a sight to see three heads coming out of the water at the same time. The bass have been active near the mouth of my harbor. Once the busy weekenders came the end of last week, so came the end to my hot spot in that location…..

The Doe Island area also has been a good area. The bouy line running to the SW has had active fish on calm water days. When I have experienced some wind I have just learned to move out a little deeper. The other day I was catching bass in waves with small whitecaps! I normally experience poor bass fishing in the wind.

The bass have been running from 16-19 inches in length! Great action when you hook into a 4 pounder and try and make some headway back to the boat! The other day we had a nice bass break off half way back to the boat. Only to have the bass take a big leap out of the water and shake the hook lose with a "see ya later attitude"!!!!!!!

It’s smallmouth time of the big pond. Time to plan a trip to Mille Lacs and give these fisty fish a try.

  1. Bob,

Glad to see the smallies stepping up to the plate with the nice weather. Have you been seeing alot of them “cruising the shallows” or have they been hunkered down next to structure? (big boudlers or rock/sand transition)

I am looking forward to getting on that bite as well in the coming weeks!
    Thanks for the report!
