Brainerd Area Fishing Report 07-05-04

Wow! What a great weekend, I’ve never seen it so busy. Despite the conditions we are still catching lots of fish. Mostly bass but it is the summertime and that means bass and pike in the Nisswa area. Some of our better bass lakes this week have been Gull, North Long, Hubert and Upper Gull. Work the tops or edges of the weeds with spinnerbaits or jigs tipped with plastic worms. The best depths have been 5-13 feet. Topwater baits have also been productive in the early morning hours. For northern pike action the Sportland guides have had the best success casting or trolling with 3/8th oz. Spinnerbaits tipped with a heavy pike sucker minnow. We’ve had good success on Lake Edwards, and Wilson Bay on Gull. Try from 6-14 feet for hungry pike. The walleye action has been slow and spotty around here. Leeches on a Lindy rig have produced a few fish but nothing real consistent. For walleye bites keep your bait close to the weeds. 14-18 feet has been the best for us. Some nicer trophy walleyes have shown up lately including a healthy 28 ½ incher we caught over on Mille Lacs. Lakes we’ve found some nice ones on are Edwards, North Long, Whitefish and Gull. Wax worms have been catching some really nice bluegills in the area. We’ve had some weighed in this week that were pushing 1 pound. Bluegills are biting in 8-9 feet in many of our smaller lakes. Crappies are starting to turn on again after disappearing for a while. Look for crappies to be biting crappie minnows in 10-12 feet in the evening. Good luck this week! Enjoy the good fishing!
