I headed out to Fox Lake Wis. to try to find some crappies for the day. Fox lake is located in Doge county, wis., the lake has a max depth 19 feet with 2625 acres of water. The lake is home to gills, large mouth bass, muskie, pike, walleyes and the fish that is the most sought after the crappie. Over all one of my favorite lakes it is becoming for in our area.
I walked out to Maple point and set up in about 16 feet of water. Drilled some holes and got the flasher going and moved to a few holes looking for fish. One hole was showing a good school of fish down there for the moment. Most days the crappies will come and go in large schools that are roaming around the basin.
The bait of choice were diamond jigs, blue fox jigging spoons, and one set up with a plain hook and split shot. The live bait of choice was red spikes, wax worms and live minnows. The spit shot rig helps to draw the fish in as well as catching some on the plain hook. Some times the flasher screen would look like a christmas tree when they all came in. The jigging spoon colors that worked best for the day were the perch patterns. Colors for the jigs were green and yellow with black eyes on them.
The schools of fish would come and go through out the afternoon of fishing. With the bigger game fish in the lake some of the crappies would have sign that a bigger game fish took a swipe at them. Over all a good afternoon of fishing and its a great lake to take your kids out to chase some crappies as well.
Sounds like a good time Jeff!
Thanks for the report.
