Last week spent Tuesday, Thursday and Sunday trolling Lake Koshkonong to find walleyes are still on a hot bite trolling cranks. Water levels are still high at flood stages but dropping fast. Water levels in the last week has dropped over 8 inches and still dropping. Algae bloom is getting at full peak also. Check out the rest of my report for the tricks to keep the algae off your crankbaits and what crankbaits are hot and the depth I’m running them.
Tuesday I meet two friends from Beloit WI at the Anchor Inn in Newville WI and we launch about 5:30 AM. We started off fishing the bridge pillars at hwy 59 with jigs and crawlers and leeches fishing the eddies. After 30 minutes with no fish I asked the guys if they would like to try the trolling bite and they jump at it. With in 10 minutes Gary (aka. shutupandfish)on the left caught this nice keeper walleye on a Rattlin Suspending Glass Shad Rad GSR-5 45 feet back on 10# test line that would run around 9 to 10 foot deep.
On Thursday I got to go out fishing again with my buddy Ted Peck famous outdoor writer and guide. I don’t know if you anglers know Ted but he does writing for Wisconsin Sportmans Magazine and the Janesville Gazette and does radio at JVL 99.9 and has been on lots of TV fishing shows. Ted loves IDA and can only do us good. Here’s a nice keeper walleye on the right Ted caught on a Rapala Jointed Shad Rap two inch firetiger 75 feet back with 20 pound test line that would run around nine foot deep.
After all my lessons from Ted on Thursday, which I thank you a lot Ted. I finally got to go fishing with my brother which has been long time coming. So Sunday I got my brother up at 5:00AM and tried the jigging bite that was not there and after 30 mintues we were trolling crankbait and put nice eaters in the livewell. We started off pulling crankbait 50, 45 and 40 feet back with ten pound test line with no fish on the first pass. With algae in full bloom another guide told me about a trick to help keep the algae off you cranks and that was to put a bb split shot two feet back from your crank which will catch all the algae and weeds most of the time. Then we tried 40, 35 and 30 feet back and it didn’t take long as my brother was bringing in this nice keeper on the left on a cordell Wally diver CDS 30 feet back which would run around six to seven foot deep.. With my brother at 6’5 and 350 pounds I didn’t argue who was going to get the rod.
They are catching good limits of walleyes on the west side of the lake in the mouth of the river on the clam bed drifting with 1/8oz to 1/4oz jig tipped with leech or nite crawler. It was great when I would make a trolling pass by those anglers and always pick up a nice walleye. So after two or three hours of running boards which I have found out isn’t easy and can be stressful at times, you might need to relax and try the mouth of the river on the west side by Newville drifting.

Nice Post BOLA,
I have never launched at Neville. My father in law will be in town for the 4th and he has never been catfishing. I plan to get him on the lake but it would be a bonus to drag some lines for some walleye. I think he would like that. So enough said. How do you get to the launch.
Thanks
Diesel
i have been out hammering the perch on lake michigan. easy limits of 13 and 14 inch perch with the occassional 15 and 16 incher. even saw a 17.5 caught and measured!! although its fun, i will be back on the mighty kosh soon. trolling is my favorite so i better not let the opportunity get a away.
jeff, do you like running your rods so close together. seems like that might be giving you your stress!!
Way to go Jeff . The water down here is finaly dropping. I’ll be out this weekend . Great report and many more to come.
Diesel take hwy 26 south out of Fort Atkinson about 5 miles until you come to hwy N then take a right on N go about 3 miles until the stop sign and thats hwy 59, take a right and that will take you right to Newville which is about 3 miles and after you cross the bridge the Anchor Inn and launch is on your left.
Mike we ran our boards close together because of all the boat traffic on the river. We didn’t do much trolling on the lake. Lets hook up and go fishing in your boat.
Thanks Tony
jeff, any time you want. just let me know when. i’m fishing a tournament on the weekend of the 24th. other than that i’m pretty open. you should come down for some monster perch. heading out in about 5 minutes. maybe i will take some pictures and post them.
Nice report Jeff! Keep em coming!
