The walleye fishing on Mille Lacs has been changing as much as the weather. Windy, cold fronts, sunny, and cloudy days…….It’s been difficult to get any kind of a pattern down. The bobber bite shallow has been our only savor.
The past 3 weeks I have spent a great deal of time on the water. The shallow rock reefs on the eastside have been the only real bite that I have had. Slip bobber fishing in 8 to 17 feet of water. Moving deeper when the sun is out. The cloudy and windy days have been a little better than others.
I was asked Saturday after the Tournament at Hunters Point ended where we have been getting our fish. Well my answer was one here and another over there! You had to keep moving, either by moving the anchor rope on the cleats or by pulling up and moving. I think on Friday I pulled the anchor 30+ times……
The walleye are scathered all over the place. If you mark some fish, you should park on them and fish. If you plan on making a trip to Mille Lacs, the weather does look to stabilize this week a bit. Maybe now I can put the winter gear away finally? Check out the rocks with a bobber and a leech or look to the deep edges of the southend gravel to be holding a few fish. The water temperatures are in the lower 60’s right now and thats a round 3+ weeks behind for the end of June.
Sorry no pictures with this report. I plan to spend some time looking for the smallmouth this week. I will report on my success!
Nice finish in the Hunters Bob. Did you get George’s message? We had plenty of chances on Sat but missed fish dont count. I would agree we are finding the same pattern. Fish are schooling up nice in the early morning before the sun gets high and when there is no pressure. We worked the main lake gravel during the RCL on Sat and found lots of nice fish on top until we caught a 25 inch fish and another tourney boat saw that and moved in right behind us. We continued our drift and hooked more fish which caused boat #2 to get up on our @ss which then brought in 6 more boats Needless to say, that was the end of that bite. We saw lots of boats on the move all day long. I had a great partner for the RCL and it was alot of fun. Congrats to Steve and Don for cashing a check.
The nite bite remains consitent. I set up two buddies of mine on a southend rock pile Sat nite and they caught 8 fish from 10pm to 11pm.
We were able to catch quite a few fish on Thur and Fri when the wind was really blowing, with quite a few slots. Sat we still caught fish, but not as many slots for the RCL. My buddy and I were able to each only boat 1 keeper, but had over 10 fish, with others missed. We were rigging leeches along transition areas from rock to sand to mud in 17′-26′.
