Mississippi River Bass Fishing Pool 7 — 06.26.04

Geeperz, it sure has been a long time since I’ve posted a report on pool 7. Seems to me like high water and tourneys have been getting in the way.

Saturday morning came way too early and I was stirred from my restful sleep by a one ring phone call from my partner. My wife said “the phone only rang once and I didn’t get to it in time.” I said that’s okay, that’s just means JC is waiting for me in the driveway and I need to get rolling.

After tossing my gear bag and a fistful of rods in the boat we were on our way up the river heading towards Trempealeau. Soon after trying a few ‘gimme’ spots and coming up empty, we headed for a small closing dam that on occasion puts out some real nice fish. On this occasion it didn’t let us down. Having said that, what it did offer was something we weren’t exactly looking for. This Sheepshead sure put up a fight. Not knowing what was on the end of JC’s line at the time, we ended up chasing it with the trolling motor. Trophy fish like that don’t come around very often.

The rest of the morning hours left us in a quandry wondering where the fish are moving to now that the river is on a steady fall. We found it to be a tough bite for quality fish on the main channel structure. We caught many small fish, but nothng of any size until we started fish backwater ares.

The fish pictured here was caught flippin’ weed edges in the back end of a small bay. This pattern actually proved to be our best for the day. With a falling river stage, these fish certainly won’t hold in this area long.

Here’s another nice Largemouth that fell victim to a Berkley Power Worm in the weeds. I lrigged this worm on 1/4oz Gambler Florida Rig weight. I like the Gambler weights because they don’t let the plastic slip away from the weight. I used to pin my weights with toothpick and rubberbands, but these weights allow me to fish more without the fuss of pinning my weight.

Our last fish of the day came off a sweet current seam that just screamed fish. Too bad this bruiser was the only one home. It surely could have made up for the lackluster day we had.

At any rate, it was good to be back out on the water. The weather was great and the company was second to none. Thanks to Jeremy for coming up and getting me out of the house. I look forward to doing it again soon!

I hope to see you all out on the water! Good luck fishing!

  1. Tom JC,

Thanks for the report. I agree with you, any spice of fish that grows to those proportions deserves a little respect. Sounds like everyone on the river right now is trying to figure out where the fish will show up next. The good news is the water is clearing fast and the fishery is alive and healthy.

  2. JC..you’re not the only one who can catch Sheepies while Bass fishing…lol…Not as big as the one you have, but heck of a plastic killa

  3. We did manage a handfull of smallies today..nothing all that big though. The sheepies were the biggest thing caught today.

My digital cam kept erasing our pictures, but here is one I salvaged of DanWi w/a Smallie. Only a few other were a touch bigger, the rest were this size. Great time OTW though…
