With the MAyfly hatch starting the walleyes are on the move and on the feed out in the DEEP Structure of the main lake. The last few days we have been hump hopping and the bite is great. We have been concentrating are efforts on the small mid-lake humps that locate closest to the shoreline. These seem to be the stopping grounds for the fish that are on the move to their summer hideaways. We have seen numbers of all sizes the last few days and here in one of Harry’s big ones.
Jigs and minnows are still the preferred bait. We have upsized the jigs to those 3/8 oz MAXGAP jigs and the MAXGAP rattle jigs are really showing the best numbers. When jigging we are going vertical if the bite slows and long lining and snap jigging when they are active. Heres was one of Mels slot fish.
Most of the humps that we have fished show great signs when arriving, but after catching fish for a hour or so they seem to scattered or turn off. We have kept movng to the next hump or small piece of structure and the action picks right back up. The fish have been holding on the steepest breaks located on each of the humps. Most of the fish are haning from 24-30 feet, pending on the depth of the hump. Here is Jim’s extremely healthy 24 inchers.
The jig and minnow bite seem to be putting the best numbers in the boat but I would expect the we will be rigging leeches and crawlers in the near future, like before this weekend. The choice of minnow has been shiners up until most of the bait shops have ran out, now large chubs or golden shiners are working just fine. With many of the eaters showing up more and more each day, we should have an excellent deep water bite for a couple weeks and maybe longer. The bug hatches have not seemed to slow things down for the time being and we will only see what will happen to the bite as the hatch continues on. This was Bob’s largest of the day, a nice 23 incher.
