Big Green Lake, Wis fishing report

The last 2 weeks I have been doing some guide trips on Big green for bluegills and smallies. Water temps have been in the low 70,s lately but are warming back up with some 90 degree days this last week. Green lake is a great spot for some big gills and you will always get into the smallies when you are panfishing.

The areas we have been fishing is in about 15 to 19 feet of water off the vegetation line on the drop offs. I added the new structure scan on the HDS 7 and the key to getting bit is finding the big clusters of bait and fish for sure. We are anchoring up wind from the schools of fish and are letting enough rope out on the anchor line to get on top of the schools of fish.

The tools for getting the gills we were using light rods and 4 to 6 pound test line. The baits were were using are ice fishing jigs, plain colored hooks and floating jigs as well. The key was to get your split shot on the bottom and do one crank of the reel to get your bait just about 6 inches off the bottom. You set the distance of your split shot on your line so when the split shot is on the floor of the boat , so when you reel up one crank of the reel your hook ends up 6 inches off the floor and you are set to go.

Over all it been some good fishing for the gills and smallies are a bonus for sure. Some of the gills are 10 inches and most are 8 to 9 inches with your share of shorter ones as well. Some of the days we had about 8 smallies while panfishing.

  1. Nice report!

I have noticed that the crappies have been on the chew in central MN. I have been using a drop shot style rig trolling about .7 mph on windward shorelines.

    It has been lights out!!
