My wife and I spent Sunday on Koronis. It was only the second time I have ever fished the lake and hoped to find some nice bass for a tournament there this weekend. We started by working some outside weed edges throwing Bomber Fat "A"s and Outkast Money Jigs wqith spider grubs. The only other time I had fished the lake we saw with the Aqua-Vu lots of smallies holding on rocks outside these weeds and hoped to have the same success. It wasn’t to be. We didn’t manage to get a single bass this way that was legal. We did manage to catch quite a few walleyes like the one pictured on the cranks. Most were in the 15"-17" range with a couple smaller. They were very aggressive and seemed to be in the thickest cabbage we found. 3 areas gave us almost all the walleyes, and I’m sure if we had live bait, we could have gotten more by pitching jigs or using slip bobbers.
We finally got into the bass as we moved shallow. Outkast stickworms wacky rigged, or spider grubs, caught most of the fish. There wasn’t a real good inside weed edge to follow. Instead it more clumps and scattered weeds which meant the bass were scattered as well. Most were just over 2 lbs, with only 2 fish for the day hitting 3lbs. This fish hit an orange craw stickworm. Try as we might, we never managed to find the smallies Koronis is noted for. Hopefully come Sunday a couple will find there way to my boat.
There were tons of rock bass willing to bite anywhere for 1′ to 12′. We also caught perch, sunfish and pike. It was a good mixed bag, and would have been a great day to have some kids on the water. The action was non-stop.
If anyone has any hot tips on the bass on Koronis, I could use them for Sunday. Post them, or even better, send a PM. I know a lot of the club guys check these reports, and I don’t want to help them out too much. (lol)
Mike,
Thanks for the report. I’ve heard a lot about Koronis but have never fished it. Sound like it’s home to some super sized smallies. good luck in the tournament.
