Lake Winnie, MN East Shore Heats Up

The east shore comes alive on this cold and wet Friday. With winds starting out of the East at 30-40 MPH we were limited to where we could fish, so we headed down the east shore looking for an active group of Winnie Walleyes. Today Doug Pessenda and one of his customer Scott joined me for a fun filled day of walleyes. We started working the last break of the flat near the reclaim area. This water dropped from 15-30 feet and it didn’t take long to get the poles bending. Most of the better action held on the break between 15-17 feet. It was mainly a walleye/perch bite. Due to the depth and wind we had to increase the jigs to a 3/8 jig and the bait of the day again was those silver shiners. After a numbers of eaters, Doug found this first slot fish of the day, it would get topped soon after.

The key in the deeper water was keeping the presentation as vertical as possible and using a variety of jigging motions. Some fish jumped on the snap jigging, some wanted it jigged and held others wanted it jigged slowly, so we continued to mix it up and found great action. Doug had an act for the slot fish today, here was his next largest fish, a 23 incher, to soon be topped by his largest walleye to date.

With the wind getting stronger we had maybe one or two more passes to make before it was time to try to get out of the hurricane like gusts, and thats when Doug nailed this very healthy 26.5 incher. She liked the 3/8 oz MAXGAP jig in a chartuese/orange color. So after a quick photo and another pass, we decided to join Tim Dorholt and Jeff Sundin who were working a large new weed growth area near musky bay. The weed growth was holding numbers of eaters and the action was great. Here the best depth would be from 5-7 feet, with most of the bites coming from just outside of the weeds in that 7 foot of water. So from 20 feet to 5 feet, the walleyes just seemed to be everywhere. IF you have not made it to Winnie yet this year, you might think about it. The bite continue to impress.

  1. Must have been a little rough on Friday? I’d like a real detailed report about Friday so I know where to fish on Saturdays WWT. Just kidding, look forward to seeing you and Dave. Take care. Tom

  2. Needless to say I have been on WInnie each day this week, and Sorry that I have not posted a report but I will post one Saturday night. Yes I am fishing the Winnie Walleye Trail tourney this weekend, so this is part of my reasoning in not having a report this week. I will tell you the bite is smoking hot yet and we should have some awesome results for the tourney.
