The Northshore heats up drastically today and that shallow water bite that is always so fun has started. The walleyes are loading up in the shalows from Mallard point over to the Rockpile and most of the fish were coming from that 6-8 foot of water. We found many numbers of eaters with a few slot fish mixed in. Here was the first slot fish for Rob, along with this being his biggest walleye until later in the day.
A better concentration of walleyes was found near the mouth of Pigion creek and areas where rocks transitioned into either sand or new weed growth. Tipping a jig with a shiner did the best today, but after burning up over a quart of shiners we put the plastics to the test and they were absolutley jumping on the snap jigging of 3 inch chartruese Munchie Thumpers. We used the same 1/8 oz MAXGAP jigs but tipped them with the thumpers and really snapped them and the walleyes could not resist them. I plan on using them more then shiners over the next two weeks if they continue to shine. Here is Robs largest walleye to date, a dandy 24 incher.
With the water temps in the mid 60’s and the shiners just making the run for there spawn look for the shallow water bite to hang in there for a while yet and maybe longer if the water doesn’t warm up much more over the next few weeks.
