As many of you know, I AGAIN am between boats! It appears that this situation will soon be coming to an end! Thank goodness! Anyway, my buddy LeRoy Carl almost physically kidnapped me, and told me we were hitting pool 3 Sunday afternoon. What a great day to be on the water! The main channel was getting pounded by pleasure boaters, so we opted for backwaters. With the water being high, we were able to try areas that we usually could not float a boat! We hit current breaks in these areas, and found some fish to be coopertive.
We found the fish actively chasing crank baits in and around current breaks. Current flowing down through the backwaters was running about 2.7 MPH. Trolling 1-1.5 MPH just off of the main flow was best. The fish were hitting hard when they would hit. Colors this trip were Blue and orange Shad Raps, and Little Rippers. Anything too big, like over a #5 Shad Rap would get pounded down into the river bottom with the current, and speed affecting them.
We found fish of many sizes coexisting in many spots. The biggest fish for us was a 24". There was/is a ton of debris coming down river at this time. You should be careful with both your boat and lures. Many of the darned cottonwood seeds as well!
We did venture into Mileys for a visit, and found getting in there quite easy right now. That may change as things settle out. We caught nothing there, but saw sheepshead and small channel cats being caught. We were able to exit through one of the runs to the east, and travel all the way to Buffalo Slough without as much as nicking a stump, or bumping bottom!
Oh yeah, then there was this thing. Nothing sets me off into the "Tuckner Two Step" faster than a snake! I hate the devils! Actually, hate is too kind a word! This bad boy we esimated to be over 6 feet long! It was going from Treasure Island to ????. We see a number of these creatures swimming the backwaters, and have even had them slither into transom wells! But none as big as this!
Have a great week! We will be out and about more often now as time permits. Be safe!
Tuck
I will never fish pool 3 now!!! If I would have seen that snake you would have seen a guy run on water!!!
Had one of those bad boys drop off a cliff and hit the side of the boat in Taylors falls. Spilled the bait, beer, tackle boxes ect. Between myself trying to get away from it and the dog going after it. Lucky we did not flip the boat.
Hoping to hit pool 2 in the morning. Will have to try some of those tips Chris.
I’m with you Tuck, I absolutely despise them darn things. I’d lose on fear factor if i was forced to anything with snakes.
Great report Tuck! I was supposed to be down there on Sunday afternoon as well, but Saturday was Nick’s bachelor party, and needless to say I needed the couch to recover. I plan on being out Wednesday afternoon, and Thursday and Friday so give me a call.
