Red Lake, MN Huge Crappies!

Wow is all one can say to those huge Red Lake Crappies. Today I had the opportunity to hit Red for the first time and did we have a ball catching them huge post spawn crappies. Most to all of the crappies have finished the spawn and are locating in post spawn feeding areas. They are truely the most aggressive crappies of the year from now until the make there move to thier summer havens. Here was the first slab for Dan treb, a dandy 15 incher.

We fished the rock piles that are on the South shore. MOst of the Southshore has piles of rocks located from Rogers to the West. The better piles of rocks right now are located in about 7 feet of water. The presentation are simple. A demon like jig with a bobber and set the bobber about 3-5 feet. Just a small adjustment in bobber depth can make a huge difference. Jig color at times can be crucial but today a glow pink or blue did the ticket. Normally each day the bobber bite will slow and if or when it does one can get back into the action by using a 1/16 or 1/32 oz jig tipped with a good sized fathead. Here was the first double of the day for Bill and Don.

IF you like the ice fishing, you would not beleive the open water fishing. The bobbers hardly sit on the water once you find them. One key to Red and open water crappies is having a few days with calm weather. If you make a trip after a hard wind, do not except a bite as the water gets very dirty and those slabs just fail to find your bait. Here is the end results of about one hour of Fishing on the Southend Rocks.
