Hi Everyone,The walleye action on Big V this week has been good despite the horrible wet conditions. High winds and rain, have sent many an angler home early to warm up by the fireplace. We have had east winds blowing in the 20 to 35mph range or about 10 days now. It has made it very difficult to fish the open water areas of the main lake.
My primary locations have been the deep transition zones where it goes from mud to sand or gravel. Depths of 25 to 40ft have produced very well in recent days.We are catching great numbers however I have had to cull though lots of small males to get my limits. Fireball jigs tipped with shiners or chubs have been the hot ticket for me. Firetiger, green and white and orange and white have by far been the best colors. Working the bait slow and verticle is a must, most of the fish are hitting very light so using a stinger hook will really up your odds.
There are some anglers finding fish in the shallows and along the weed edges on the west end. That presentation has not been very consistent however, here on the east side of the Big V.
I have taken a few walleyes on cranks up close on the shoreline, while casting for Smallmouth this week. Early and late in the day are the best time to try for these very shallow fish.
The slip bobber action is begining to heat up in the evening. I haven’t had as much success with it as some others, but this is typically the best time of the season for a slip bobber rig. Tip them with a leech or a minnow on a #6 red hook or a 1/4 oz jig for the best results.
The smallmouth action has been getting better by the day and I see no reason for that to change. Cranks, spinnerbaits, inline spinners, soft plastics and jerkbaits are all catching fish right now.
Have a great week and please remember to put some back.
