Night Fishing Walleyes on the Wisconsin River

Since the day bite has been so tough lately, (not to mention the heavy traffic) I elected to spend a fair amount of time fishing at night instead. Not that I don’t fish at night anyway but more & more, when fishing for pre-spawn spring walleyes, night fishing is just way more productive for me.

Early March is usually a great time to fish for walleyes after dark on the Wisconsin River. This year however, it just wasn’t panning out for me. That all changed this past week.
The night wading still isn’t great but at least I’m catching fish on a regular basis. Nothing real big yet but fish are there and there’s always a few that are willing to eat on any given night.

With the tough day time bite lately, I’ve decided to give up fishing day light on the weekends and fish at night instead if at all possible. That paid off rather nicely on Saturday night with several better walleyes coming boat side for a few pictures before being released.

Best baits have been stick baits or jig & plastics. The orange core Moxie from B’Fish’N’ Tackle has easily been my best plastic color lately. Due to its effectiveness, it also has been getting the majority of the time in the water whenever I’m not casting a stick bait.

This is going to be a short report mostly because I’m pretty tired and need to take a nap. Brains kinda fuzzy after fishing for most of the night.

  1. Nice job Joel! I have to admit I’m a bit jealous. I can’t leave for the Miss until the 8th…been watching the water temps step up a degree a day and has passed my magical 38 when I get serious on crank’n. Enjoy the night life! Any ski’s yet??

  2. Nice looking fish Joel. Avoiding daylight is a good idea at the dells, unless you want to work on frustration management.

  3. Thanks guys!

Randy – no ski’s at all so far this year.

Up till early last week, it had been a very slow start to the year for me.

  4. Great report Joel, never get sick of seeing you hoist those fish! Congrats on the great fishing, and thanks for keeping tabs on the bite!

    Nice.

I see a new Jointed Shad Rap in fire tiger!!

That’s the new Shallow Jointed Shad Rap. Looked like such a good lure that I had to put her out there just to see. It definitely catches fish!

  6. Very nice report. Makes me see another reason to put the new waders I just bought for kayaking the river south of the Dells to use. Now I just need to get there.

  7. Well done on the eyes Joel !!

I’m looking at getting out on the river here soon too.. you just make that itch even more itchy !!!

  8. Nice job Joel, this springs warm up and the walleyes have been slow coming. The weather and fish will have to come around eventually and I’m hoping the next couple of weeks both will be cooperating.
