Lake Zumbro Rochester Mn Area Lake Fishing 5-22-04

Lake Zumbro crappies and bluegills were cooperating very well this past weekend. Mike from Hooked On Fishing and our friend Ron and I hit the lake for some multispecies fishing and mother nature was kind with no rain.

I have to say I’m sorry for no pics this time out as I forgot the camera and of course the fishing was very good because of it, lol. The bottom two thirds of the lake still had some nice clear water even though there had been alot of rain earlier. The fish were all shallow with the males being very dark so its getting closer to the spawn time.

The techniques that worked best were a bobber to maintain the best depth found and a jig with either hair or a plastic body on it. Small minnows also caught fish. Light tackle and rods made each fish seem like a big one and made for a fun day on the water.

The big fish for the day was a northern that I caught with a ultra light rod and won me the ”big fish prize” which was: whoever catches the biggest fish buys super. lol. Doesn’t really figure but thats the contest we agreed on. Maybe I’ll get lucky and lose next time. A great day to be on the water, with great friends, and lots of fish=a great combination. See ya on the water.

Thanks, Bill

  1. The area down past Fishermans Inn from say Postiers Point to the Dam was clear. Up above Fishermans Inn and down to about Postiers Point was a dirty color. The part of the river that was clear was really nice looking water. I’m thinking those zebra mussels that got in there have really cleaned up the lake water as it had the same effect on pool 4 with cleaner water. The fish caught last weekend really surprised me as for the size of them. There are some really nice crappies and bluegils in there. Now people know why the DNR has called Lake Zumbro one of the best kept secrets in the state. The quality of the fishing has greatly improved over the years. But we have to remember to use selective harvest and keep only what one will eat as just like any other fishery it can be ruined very easily by keeping too many fish. We need to think of our kids and grandkids too and take care of the fishery so they can enjoy what we are able to enjoy today. There are also some real nice bass in there, both small mouth and large mouth. Saw a couple nice bass caught by people who were crappie fishing including one caught by Tony Walleye Kid who is on this site.
    Thanks, Bill
