The bite on WInnie continues to get better each day. The fish have started to make there move but with some cooloer nights again we found the best bite as of today in that 11-14 feet of water. OVer the last few days I have had the opportunity to fish with some great guys and I will post just a few of the slot fish we have caught this week. On Tuesday I fished with Richard Johndrow and being from Oklahoma he was amazed at the fishing and the crowds. Here is one of the better ones he got on Tuesday.
Early in the week we found the Tamarack River bed area holding some of the best numbers of active fish. We concentrated on any area that had a start of new weed growth where there was deep water near by. By mid-day Tuesday we started to find some bait and walleyes sneaking into 6-7 feet of water. Here is a few of the eaters that we have had the opportunity to get. The main eaters on Winnie right now are those 2001 class, most of the are in the 12-14 inch range, and boy is there an abundance of them.
Wednesday was the best bite so far for this opener on Winnie. The fish were absolulety hungry and schooled up very good near Tamarack point. They were holding again in that 10-11 foot of water. As long as one had a shiner on a 1/16 oz jig, most were catching. This was the first day that we could really get active with the jigging. IT seemed that the harder one jigged it, the more action one would see. There was very little movement in water depth on Wednesday. I was hoping that I could find some numbers up shallow, but each and everytime I would slide into the shallower water we would only catch small perch or pike. Here is Dan Berg big fish for Wednesday. Even though we had excellent numbers of fish caught, we found very few slot fish.
Thursday, a day to regroup. Today, Friday May 21st, the fish throw a jig at us. Thinking with an East wind that the North shore would be a good place to be, we headed there looking for good numbers. We found them but the fish were back into silver platter mode and deep. The Northshore is loaded with walleyes right now. From the Rockpile down to Stoney point, each and ever spot that we tried we caught and found very good numbers. Most of the active fish are hanging in 12-15 feet of water. By late in the day today I went to a 1/8 oz jig and was able to jig with some action, not very much but enough to make it feel more like jigging and not rigging. The Northshore should be the spot to fish for the next few days forsure and likely much longer then that. IF you’re not catching fish keep checking deeper water right now, they seem to be much more active out deep.
