Mississippi River Pool 9 "Crankin" 5/17/04

It has been quite a while since my last report but it sure was good to get back out on the river and hit some more of them walleyes

Today a shared my boat with Joe"KornKing" Jiacinto and his good friend Larry. After meeting up and getting on the river we moved right onto a spot that has always produced some fish for me by long line trolling cranks, and today was no exception. On our first pull Joe pulled this nice eater out on a Red Craw Jointed Shad Rap.

Joe and Larry are both real good fishermen. With a little instruction on what the baits needed to be doing they were putting fish in the boat. Since I do not have a GPS (as of yet) I use my digital tach hooked up to my Yamaha T-8 to duplicate the speed that the walleyes like to have their baits running at. Here is another quality fish that Larry pulled out of about 12 feet of water.

With the St.Croix Avids we were using, if the crank bait were to pick up any debris, there would be an immediate loss of vibration in the rod action. With this, a quick, hard rip of the rod would usually free the debris from the bait and the crank bait would be running true once again. It is true that walleyes do not like salad with there food

The end of the day came way to soon for this guy and all good things come to an end…These two guys boated several fish this day and I’m sure we will see some more pictures in the future of walleyes from these to guys. Thanks again you two for a great day on the water

  1. Great report Dave! Glad to see you’re still on some nice fish.

I’m curious, with a 50 hp 4 stroke outboard, why do you use a kicker?

  2. We had a kick-butt, truly awesome time on the River yesterday, all thanks to Mr. Nook.

Dave is a class act and I look forward to fishing with him again in the future. The knowledge we gained of the River and techniques to fish it are priceless.

You’re not kiddin’ about the day ending too soon! After a day like yesterday, this fluorescent-lit corporate wasteland of an office is truly making me ill!

Dad’s, Father’s Day is on the way. Its time to start dropping hints for that new St. Croix rod…

    Regards,

    Joe Jiacinto

  3. Mike, That T-8 is the most beautiful piece of equiptment i own…that motor gives me the best boat control ever..I could never do it with a console steering…Speed control is fantastic and very precise.

Steve, the bottom content is a mix of mud and sand with some structure/snags on the bottom….I’m pretty sure that this is truely where Jimmy Hoffa was given his concrete slippers because he likes to grab my crankbaits as i go by,,
