Just a quick update on the walleye action on Lake Koshkonong. Action has been HOT best technique is trolling cranks and crawler harness. Water clarity on the west side of the lake and the Rock River by Newville is the best I have ever seen it. You can see at least four feet down. Here’s one walleye I CPR but the rest went to the frying pan.
Saturday I started fishing the Rock River in the morning with a friend that want to catch some catfish. So I took him to one of my favorite spots this time of year. That spot is right in town in Fort Atkinson fishing the walls. The best technique is to use slip bobbers and a leech and keep it close to the wall as possible. Just let the current take your slip bobber down river and watch your bobber and hold on to your rod. Here’s one of the nice catfish that Len caught on the left.
After dropping Len off at his house I went back home to grab a bite to eat and rigged all my rods for trolling. I was back on the water by 2:00PM and fished to 8:30 and caught five nice walleyes which I released the one in the first photo and kept these four for the frying pan. Also caught at least six small eyes.
And for Jodie that was asking for a picture of a sheephead in the shout box this morning, here’s one, I hope this is what you were looking for. For all the anglers out there please take a kid fishing and practice boat safety. Tight lines and hope to see some of you out on the water.

Nice going Jeff! They look like some pretty healthy fish. Keepem’ comin’ bud.
Nice report Jeff.
What were your best depths over the weekend on the lake?
What speed seeemd to do the trick when crankin or pulling harnesses?
A bonus cat is always a great way to change the day up!!
Nice fish Jeff. It can be fun and a good learning experience when targeting multispeies as you learn what each species is doing at this time of the year. Thanks for the pics.
Thanks, Bill
Steve Lake Koshkonong deepest part of the lake is 7′ and that’s just because water is up right now. Most of my fish were caught in 5 to 6′. I don’t have a kicker so with my 115 Johnson I would have to throw out a drift sock from the bow of the boat to get my speed down to 1.5 to 1.9. Back trolling would work at times also if the water conditions were calm.
Jeff,
Is the water clarity pretty stained? Has planer boards helped you out at all in those shallow waters? Sounds like a perfect situation for board unless there are a bunch of snaggy areas?
Steve, yes boards will work the best on Kosh. It’s a great place to learn trolling because of very little snags. But when the walleye action is hot long lining is the way to go, you get a better fight from the fish. Running boards by yourself is more work than fishing in my opinion.
Nice fish, Jeff. Now you got me thinking about quitting my job so its doesnt interfere with fishing….gotta be out of town for few days, so no way am I getting out this week or weekend. Maybe next week….what kind of cats were you getting??
Nice report and pics Jeff! Sounds like a good day!
Bola-We were out Sunday at Newville in the evening. Pulled crawler harnesses and Florescent orange Rapalas. Couldn’t buy a fish on the harness. Caught 9 eyes all on the Raps. What is the secret color for crawler harness’es?
Yellow
I have to agree with you on the water clarity Jeff. I’ve been fishing this river and lake for 35 years and have never seen it so clear!
Caught some nice walleyes before the storm today. 1/4 oz Nickle jigs and leeches did the trick. Watch for my report late Mondat night.
I think I’ll be going out today maybe this afternoon!
