Lake Zumbro was the place my fishing buddy and I chose to go to get in on some crappie and bluegill action.
Fellow IDA staffer Mike Smith of Hooked On Fishing Bait and Tackle in Rochester [shown in the first picture to the right] and I spent part of the day on Lake Zumbro of the Zumbro River fishing for crappies and bluegills. Using light action rods made the day even more fun.
Moving untill the fish were found was the search method used. The techniques used were a jig and plastic under a bobber to be able to maintain the proper depth once that was found for the day. Giving the bobber a quick short tug every 10-15 seconds seemed to turn the fish on once they were located.
Finding a little bit warmer water temps of 62.6 degrees and clearer water turned out to be the biggest factor in locating more fish. It wasn’t fast but was fun. We switched to crappie minnows after awhile to take more fish from the area we had used the plastics. If you are looking for some fun panfish action for yourself or your kids try a small lake or river near where you live. And please feel free to check out the Rochester Area Lakes Forum to see whats biting in the many small lakes in the Rochester area.
Thanks, Bill
