Lake Delton, Wi. crappie report

Lake Delton is a small lake of about 267 acres which is located in Sauk county, wis. Its across from the wisconsin river down from the Wisconsin Dells dam and just down the road from one of my favorite resorts and bait shops, Rivers Edge on county road. A. Its a great place and you always get more than your share of minnows.

I only had a couple of hours to fish today , I dropped the wife off at the dentist in the Dells and thought I would give a try. I set up the shack and was using diamond jigs tipped with wax worms in about 20 feet of water. Got the jig down to the bottom and pulled in a couple of nice crappies. I was marking some nice fish about a foot off the bottom on the vexilar but they seemed not to be in the chasing mood. Pulled up a nice gill and not much action down deep.

All of a sudden started marking some fish between 8 to 12 feet down and reeled up and it was a nice school of crappies coming through. Pulled in some nice crappies and it was a good bite going on. It was some fast action till the phone rang and the wife said she needed to be picked up. So I kept just enough for a meal and packed up to get the better half. We did not go back fishing but went out for lunch one of the many eating places in the Dells. Got some fishing done and spent some time with the wife. What else can a guy ask for!

  1. Great way to wait on the wife! More so, its great to see the come back of Lake Delton. As some may remember, this is the lake that blew out a dyke and drained out into the WI River – taking a few homes with it. Nice to see some healthy fish maturing and giving new life to the lake!!

  2. Yes, very nice to see. I would guess later this year/next year the keeper eyes should be there. Watched a show last year and they talked about the abundance of 12″-13″ fish. I think the DNR and Fisheries people did a great job restoring the fish population after a complete loss. Hopefully some good ruling and the public can make it a great fishery for years to come!

  3. Cool report…. and it is good to see the lake rebounding. I remember walking around the middle of the basin after it was drained…. it was quite a site to actually see something like that, and the area that was swept away after it broke through to the river.

  4. Discover WI, or Due North Outdoors, can’t remember exactly, but they were catching 12″-13″ eyes and were talking about the future of the lake and that it would be great in a year or two. Maybe it was Gillespie…
