Lake Mason bluegill report

Lake Mason is located at Briggsville, Wi., which not far from Portage and the Wisconsin Dells. We parked the truck at the landing on the south side of the lake. The iced varied in spots from 5 to maybe 7 inches thick. There were 4-wheelers out on the ice and some shacks allready. The lake has been known has long as I can remember as hot spot to catch a lot of gills, and if you do some sorting out the smaller ones you can always take some home for a meal. Also the lake holds some nice crappies and perch as well. Back in the 70’s we used to even get some nice walleyes out of here. There are a lot of stumps in the lake also to fish by.

We set up in about 4 1/2 feet of water with the flasher and in the clam to get out of the wind for the day. For the baits I used was diamond jigs in various combo colors tipped with wax worms. The green and yellow ones worked the best for the day. Jigging had to be a fast motion to bring them in at the middle of the day , but after 3 pm all you had to do was get the jig back down there to get a bite. The bite really picked up as the sun was getting at the tree tops .

Overall it was a nice day to be on the ice and the fishing was not too bad either. Got 18 gills for a meal and threw back some smaller crappies,1 nice perch and about 30 smaller gills that are still swiming. Did not make it down to the stump feilds at all for the crappies.
