Not so slender slender spoon Gills

Well with the ice forming late in our area again this season we are just receiving safe enough ice to get out on by walking. In most areas on the lake we were fishing we had anywhere from three to four inches of ice. We set out this morning targeting multi species including Blue Gills, Walleyes and Northern Pike.

After arriving to the area we wanted to fish which was a deeper hole in a relatively featureless shallow lake we began drilling lots of holes in and all around the deeper water. By drilling lots of holes this enables us to hole hop frequently to intercept roaming fish.

We were using Custom Jigs and Spins tackle including Ratso’s and Shrimpo’s along with small gold colored Slender spoons. We started the morning using the soft plastics catching some fish but the water clarity was a little murky so we switched over to Slender spoons which would give us more flash and vibration and began catching and seeing many more fish on our Marcum Flashers .

We were tipping our spoons with both wax worms along with Minnow heads. The Gills were pretty aggressive so there really was not a bait preference we caught them on both. By fishing each hole just for e few minutes and then moving to another hole really helped us intercept roaming schools of fish. Along with catching lots of really nice size Blue Gills we also caught some nice Walleyes on the spoons which were really fun. While we are just getting started ice fishing in our area and a promising forecast things should really kick into gear for us shortly. Good fishing and as always be safe.
