Had a little time at the end of the day to do some ice fishing today. Got down to Lake Wisconsin about 3 pm. and stopped at one my favorite spots for some early ice fishing for gills. Only a hand full of guys out so set up in a area where no one has been yet.
Drilled two holes side by side and sat down to fish, I figured I just had a little over an hour to fish for the day. So being mobile was not an option. Just took a pail, auger and 2 jig poles. Both the poles I used were set up with diamond jigs and were tipped with 2 spikes for bait. The jig poles were St. Croix premier ice pir24ul with spring bobbers on them as well for detecting some light bites.
The fishing started out pretty consistant and was I getting faster action as the sun started to set. Finally used just one pole so I was not missing so many fish using 2 poles. One nice thing using spikes is that you can catch quite a few fish with out baiting your jig each time you get a fish. Some of the bigger gills hit when the jig was not moving at all for awhile.
Sorry for the short report but I just fished for about an hour before dark. Overall it was a great hour of fishing for myself. Stopped by the folks and dropped off the fish for a meal for them. My folks are in their 80’s and do not get out fishing when its this cold.
Here is a pic of the diamond jig that I was using, green is always my favorite color. Two pound test for fishing line is a must for fishing shallow clear water.
Nice work Jeff!
Thanks for the report, Jeff. I think I know that spot!
Thanks guys!
Those last minute instincts sure can pay off! Nice batch of fish Jeff
