The action like Kizew stated on the Message board has really heated up. My report earlier in the week found the pike action to be the hottest. With the water temp on a steady rise, a variety of species are on verge of heavy feeding action. The anglers fishing in the club tournament found decent weights. Pan fish action is picking up in shallow water areas. Walleye action is decent with both lake and river eyes on the bite. Trolling #5 cranks in a fire tiger color is producing some fine perch action.
Since my last report my pursuit has been transition eyes. Thursday was like a switch had been turned on! The water bumping up to 55 degrees found concentration of eyes in various locations on the system. Anywhere from 6ft to 18ft could produce fish. Once the fish were located, staying tight on them was key, in another words if you moved the presentation by them to quick you were dead. Minnows, crawlers and leeches offered up on live bait rigs (such as Lindy’s) has been my presentation the last few days. My better fish are coming off Nuckle ball jigs but the bite on jigs remains slow.
Saturday had to be the one of the best weather days we have had in some time. I started off the morning trolling cranks on main lake. The 12ft depth seemes to be key for taking both pike and perch. By mid-morning I swiched to livebait rigging for eyes. 10ft to 16 ft depths were holding fish but you have to sort through quite a few dinks to get a keeper or two.
I had the pleasure Saturday afternoon fishing with James and Sonya Jansma. Livebait rigging for eyes again was our best presentaton. The afternoon started off a little slow, a few fish some missed bites but we stuck with the game plan. The first picture is James with a good one putting a bend in the pole. Into early evening the action got fast and furious! It was worth staying just a bit late. The second picture is James and Sonya with a few eaters. All in all a great day of fishing. See you on the water, Don
Thanks Don. Whats your favorite, or best, search lure for finding walleyes and crappies on Lake Menomin? Thanks, Bill
Bill, for eyes early in the year it is hard to beat a finesse rig. I will go with either a #8 or #10 aberdeen style hook. I like running at least a 6ft snell length. Depending on wind and current, I will use Lindy NO Snagg sinkers in either 1/4 or 1/2 ounce. As the temps warm up, trolling #5 floating cranks on 3 ways will find both the eyes and panfish. The white bass can be a blast also. Using a tube jig or flu-flu in the bays and weeds is also a good choice for crappies and gils. Thanks for the question. Don
Thanks Don. Super fast reply.
