Lake Vermilion Prime Time

The weather is starting to cool down here on the iron range and the lakes are setting up perfect for the big dance! I have been fortunate enough to land a personal best pike and muskie in the last week. The fish are starting to show up into my predictable spots and boy are they putting on the feed bags!

To begin my report I’d like to talk about the lure selection for this time of year. I mostly have been tossing big baits such as pounder model bulldogs, madussas and 14in jakes although some fish have been getting excited about glide baits and smaller cranks in the daylight. The best colors have been cisco with a little bit of off color like orange or something flashy!

The story of my last two weeks has been more consistant than the turnover period. I have been casting mostly as that is my favorite way to fish but with the snow upon us i’m sure i’ll start to troll more and more. I just purchased a new lure called the Headlock and can’t wait to land a monster on it! It had a nice rip the other night but the fish got off and all that came to the boat was a little eel pout on my hook??

I’m sure that i’ll have plenty of farfetched muskie stories in the upcoming weeks with myself having 17days off from work for the TROPHY HUNT 2012. I can’t wait to see my friends catch giant muskies and new personal bests will be achieved! So if your coming up to the iron range i’d tell you to figure out your favorite kind of classy liquor and bring two bottles to celebrate!
