Lake Menomin Fishing Report

The general concensus for the opener was hit and miss. The eye action was slow but the pike bite made up for it.

I was on pool 4 on Saturday but hit Menomin early Sunday Morning. From the lack of boats on the water I figured Saturday was slow and anglers opted for other waters. My first fish of the day was a 15.25 inch eye. That also happened to be my only eye for the day also! I was fishing main current areas between 12 and 16 ft of water. Although the eye bite is off some the pike action makes up for it. Right now good pike action can be had on numerous presentations. Jigs fished vertical and pitched, and Lindy rigging are my best producers.

Monday again found the eye bite still off, I boated a handful of short fish. Again the pike action made up for it, any type of current break seemed to be holding pike. There are quite a few hammerhandles but there are some quality fish mixed in. I found the better fish relating to rocks. Lindy rigging with about a four foot snell seemed to work best. Color of hook or added bead did not make a difference. One adjustment I do make is in the hook size. If I am fishing over rocks and snags I will use a #6 baitholder hook. If I am over a snag free bottom I will switch over to a # 10 Abeerdeen style. Give it a try next time out, you will be surprised at the results.

Tuesday morning found mostly small males accounting for the eye action. Again the pike fishing was hot, along with some dandy white bass. The best presentation was either slowly trolling against the wind or slipping with the wind. On all three days the preferred bait was fatheads. Leeches and crawlers just are not doing anything yet.

For targeting eyes the lake is off right now. If your looking for a mixed bag, the action is hot. See you on the water, Don.

  1. I am using 8lb mono for my main line. I run between a 4ft and 8ft snell, either 6lb or 8lb depending on bottom content.I like using either XT or Vanish for my snells. I have more of a problem getting jigs bit off then I do when Lindy rigging. The water temp has alot to do with it also. When the temps warm and the fish have more fight, the bite off rate goes up.
