The bite has been a little all over the place lately, but all things considered it hasn’t been bad. The question that needs to be answered every time I hit the water is; Are they deep or shallow? Just as it happens every year at the end of summer, we start to get a sneak peak at the early fall bite. Over the past couple of weeks, fish have been found in shallow when overcast and wind is present. If you don’t have both, the shallow bite has been slow to non-existent.
Fish that have been in shallow, have been fairly easy to find. We’ve had a few days where they have really been stacked up on rock piles or sand flats. Otherwise, they have mostly been scattered throughout weed flats with cabbage being the preferred vegetation.
With the warming weather we are finding a good number of fish out deep still. They aren’t concentrated as heavily in certain spots, so we’ve had to search them out a bit and then wait to see when they will bite. We’ve had a few days where muskies will be pushing baits or folding over dawgs out deep but not opening their mouths to eat. If we stick it out and on a good spot, we will usually have a small feeding window open up that yields a few oppurtunities at a nice musky.
Fish have been found on weed edges as well. They haven’t really set up shop yet, from what I’ve seen anyways. There has been more baitfish hanging off the edges so it shouldn’t be long before they start ambushing baits on the edge. After we come down off this warm spell, I expect it to be a weedline and in bite almost exclusively. The fish that have been taken on weed edges have been at night.
I do have some dates open in the next few weeks and we are entering what I think is the most exciting time to musky fish… So, if 3, 4, or 5 fish days are something your interested in… Let me know!
Thanks for another great report Ryan! Always enjoy the read. I had a new PB a few nights ago with a monster 51 incher! Can’t wait for the fall fatties!!!
Thanks for keeping us in-tune with the pulse of the bite right now. Happening all over, for multiple species. Fall bites are yet to come, but we’re all chomping at the bit. Something tells me the fish are too.
