Jolly Roger Tackle Report – Walleye Bonanza!

I keep thinking the good fishing we’ve had on Mille Lacs must start to slow down sometime, but nothing has been farther from the truth! My weekend started out by taking out a group that won a trip I donated for a United Way Silent Auction. My goal was to give each of these 3 rookie anglers the thrill of having a feisty Mille Lacs Walleye slam a spinner behind a bottom bouncer. We started out on one of my favorite flats and the goal was achieved within the first 30 minutes for each angler. They had a blast as none of them had caught a walleye before in their lives. By the end of the day, all 3 were now walleye veterans as we boated a good 25 fish. Thanks Hitomi for your winning bid as we had a great time for a great cause. I had a ball fishing with you guys!

On Sunday, I was out with the Marsh Outdoors Crew and had just an unbelievable day. Our plan was to pull spinners/bouncers on structure, but I was prepared to pull cranks of even pull the spinners open water style as I had to work for them a little more on Saturday. Our first spot was a little slow so after an hour we moved. As we started cruising spot #2, I couldn’t believe how many fish were stacked up on a few different stretches. We started catching fish right away and had steady action all day. Same program as I’ve reported all summer still…Bottom Bouncers, Jolly Roger Spinners and Air Injected Crawlers. We did switch up colors a few times. This week’s hot one was the #3 Firebelly as its name implies was on FIRE! By 10 AM, we were both using it and must have boated a good 45-50 fish. Slots have been tough lately, but we caught 7 or 8 perfect ones just under 17". Those would have made for a great meal or tournament basket, but we were just C&R fishing on Sunday. The highlight was a monster caught by Jordan Marsh that was a fingernail width shy of 30 inches. That was the biggest Mille Lacs fish I’ve seen in quite some time and was very fat too. In addition to Firebelly, we also caught fish on Electric Perch, Goby and Clown this weekend. The bite is still on, so if you want to get in on the action it can still be had.

Best of Fishing,

  2. What a great day on the water. Thanks again Shawn, this is going to make for some great film for the Marsh Outdoors TV show next year!!
Folks if you havent tried out these spinners yet, make sure to put them to the test on the walleyes. I have been using these all over Wisconsin, in Minnesota, and up in Canada and I have found a baitfish color that Jolly Roger carries that has worked on each waterbody I have traveled to. You wont be disappointed

  3. Awesome report Shawn!

What a hawg With concerns earlier in the year about a baitfish shortage its great to see how fat and healthy the fish are looking

Agreed and nice work! That’s a very healthy looking fish! Sunday there were a few big ones on the chew, I was only out for 3 hours in the afternoon with my wife but we went through 10 including this nice 28″ over – all on cranks!

    Can’t wait for Thursday…

walleyewacker18 – what color did you have success with?

I was in the boat with Shawn. I will say, the Firebelly #3 was on FIRE!!

  6. Firebelly has been a producer up in the Detroit Lakes area this year as well!
Looks like I finally will need to get down that way and give things a try on ML, as the bite just hasn’t seemed to slow down one bit!

    Hi Loren,

That’s good to hear! What lakes do you fish up there? Those all my old stomping ground when growing up in ND as my grandparents lived on Shell Lake (20 Miles East of DL). I used to get around all over up there.

    Thanks,

    Shawn Flemming

Shawn- I fish alot of the lakes between DL and Ottertail. Seems like so many lakes and so little time up in this area. Don’t get over towards Shell Lake much though there are some great lakes out that way.
