Door County Multi Species Action

With summer in full swing and water temps rising fast fishing has been great for all species of fish in our area. Walleyes are setting up in there summer patterns and moving out into mid basin areas relating to schools of bait fish that are suspended and moving about in mid basin areas along with off shore structure areas.

We are fishing for walleyes with spinner and crawler combinations behind inline weights covering different depths in the water column until steady action is found then targeting that depth until fish move up or down in the water column. I have found good success the past couple trips running #5 colorado blades from Jolly Roger Tackle in the colors of purple,Blue, And gold.

With the early warm weather this season the Salmon action started early and is still going very strong. Water temps on the lake are warming quickly so the salmon have been moving deeper lately but still biting very well. We set out the other morning just before 4am and began fishing in 80 FOW and had a couple fish then moved out to 115 FOW and set baits deeper and found better success.

I can not say enough how great the Smallmouth Bass action has been lately. We have been catching fantastic numbers of Bass in relatively shallow water still using soft plastic baits such as grubs and stick worms.Along with some big fish being caught we are catching incredible numbers of 2 to 3 pound fish daily. On a full day trip yesterday we had to have caught 80 to 90 fish absolutely incredible it was as simple as casting out and reeling in another fish. What made it so special for me is that most of the fishers were kids who were having a blast competing against each other with who was catching more fish.

  1. Sounds like both a guide AND client’s dream come true. You pick the species, and we’ll knock it out of the park for both size and number. Congrats on the great fishing.

One question Paul on pulling spinners – I know you guys have some ultra clear water up there on the big lake. Are you pulling a bit deeper to account for that? Using longer leaders? Anything special you’re doing to adjust for those clear conditions or are you just fishing with more of a chop?

  2. Hi Joel

In the clear water in the northern part of the bay I prefer to use snap weights as opposed to inline weights this gives me the ability to adjust the distance between the weight and the spinner. Generally I still fish relatively shallow in the water column putting baits at different depths of course put not fishing to deep. Fish that may be deeper than what my baits are running are well aware that those baits are above them in the clear water they can see them and will come up some great distance for a bait as apposed to not seeing a bait that is running to deep.
