Clear Lake,IA,Apr 23 & 24,2004

Rain, rain,& more rain!!!! Wade Kuehl, myself and my oldest boy Cole traveled to Clear Lake in hopes of catching a few yellow bass and walleye. We managed to get out on the water Friday night with only a few small fish caught.Saturday we were on the water early and worked for a few hours with little luck.Off to Billy’s Reef to give it a try and we ran into Clayfish(Clay) and Panfish(Todd) from IDA.Here is a pic of them anchored up on top of the reef.

Clay and Todd were having great luck with a single hook and a few split-shots with minnows as their bait of choice.Todd was also casting a small thumper jig tipped with a minnow and doing very good on this presentation.Wade and Cole went to a split shot set-up and started to get a few fish. Here is Cole with Wade with a yellow bass. This was Cole’s first yellow bass he had caught.

Wade was trying out his new Gary Roach sig. series Lighting Rod with a G2000 Avocet reel.He really liked the action of the rod and also was happy with the Avocet also.Wade was our hot stick for the day.He put 2 legal eyes in the boat and lost his 3rd at the side of the boat.Wade with a Clear Lake eye.

We started to get rain about 1:00 p.m. on Sat. and it did not let up until 10:00 a.m. Sunday. It was a wet trip but very fun to get out and get on the water. We deciced to get off the water about 4:00 p.m. as we were getting cold and wet.Cole picked up a keeper walleye at the last minute and was very happy to beat his dad as I did not get a legal eye during our time on the water. It was nice to have Wade Kuehl of Jolly Ann Marine in the boat for a few days.I had bought a new Lowrance LMS 480 from Wade a few weeks ago and was having a few minor problems with it.Wade took over and got the unit running like a champ-thanks Wade!!!It was also nice to see Clay and Todd on the water. They ended up with a few keeper eyes as well. Here is Cole with his walleye.

  1. It was a tough day on the water but with good friends around the weather didn’t seem that bad. I wish Ryan would have been around a bit earlier with his camera. Off of Dodge’s point I managed to land about a 40″ muskie. I was fishing eyes would have liked a picture of that but oh well. First muskie I have ever boated. It hit a no#5 shallow running fire tiger rapala. Clay was a great host took me out in his boat and showed me a great time THANKS CLAY

Wade I apprecaite all you advice about wish locator to buy. (Still haven’t made a choice yet)

Ryan also was a pleasure to BS and fish with you and Cole. It was a good thing you brought Cole or you guys wouldn’t have had much in the livewell GREAT work Cole.

Hope to see you all again soon GOOD LUCK on the water Todd.

  2. I had a great time this weekend doing a little fishing but it was even better meeting some great guys from this site. It was nice to meet Clay, Todd, and Brian as well as some of the other guys who were getting ready for the Sunday tourney. The weather was terrible but the company was outstanding! I did get a chance to try the new rod n reels – Berkley Lightning Rod with a Mitchell Avocet Gold 2000 reel. Loved ’em. Light weight and super sensitive rod and the reel was very smooth with 8bbs. I also got a chance to see the LMS 480 in action on clear lake. The Navionics chart had us dead on all the time. I’ve heard som people complain about their GPS puting them “on shore” at times (and that does happen at times) but with the Navionics chart #10 we were dead on even going through the tight narrows on the lake. So all in all we got to try out some new equiptment, meet some great guys, and catch a few fish in the process. Hell, I didn’t even notice it was freezing and pouring rain!

A toast to the boys at Clear Lake. We’ll have to get together for some “pizza” again sometime.

  3. Hey All,

I got a message here wondering about walleye season. Walleye are legal on Clear Lake, Iowa right now. In Iowa, some of the lakes do close to Walleye until May 1st – Spirit, East & West Okoboji close. But Clear Lake is open to walleye. Hope that clears thing up. Thanks – Wade

  4. Ryan:

Sounds like you had a great time. Always fun to meet new people.

Your trip is proof of the old line: “I have had some poor fishing on my trips but I have never had a poor fishing trip!’.

    Thanks for your report.
