Devils Lake First Open Water Report

With open water occurring throughout the lake as of the middle as of last week, angler activity has stepped up considerably. The docks are slowly being put out as the weather conditions allow. The bulk of angler activity has centered around the Mauvais Coluee and Channel A from Six Mile Bay. Shorefisherman have access to this area. Boaters can not venture up the Mauvais but you can get into Channel A.

The Northerns appear to have completed spawning and are returning back down towards the main lake. Walleys are in the middle of the spawn. Very fast current is moving down the Mauvais and Channel A which triggered the intense fish movement. They’ll be seeking warmer water and going on a big shallow water bite here for the next month.

Walleyes and northerns can be found in the current making feeding movements or just out of the durrent resting. They seem to be making periodic feeding runs and turning on for short periods. Walleyes have been hitting plastics, crawlers, leeches and minnows. Northerns like spoons and such.
