Great wkend bite – Lake Wisconsin Walleyes/Saugers

What a difference from just a few short weeks ago. The bite this past weekend on Lake Wisconsin was simply fantastic. That’s not to say we caught a bunch of giant walleyes or saugers. That didn’t happen. But we did catch one heck of a pile of fish and they weren’t all shorties for a change either.

We found most of our fish in the 12-15′ depth range but we also deviated into much shallower water at times to check for active fish. Most of the shallow spots didn’t produce for us but several of our better fish did come from as little as 5′ of water. It might surprise some people to hear those fish were caught directly under the boat.

Every client aboard my boat this weekend left with a limit of walleyes and/or saugers. I’m not saying I would like to see that happen all the time, but after all the tough fishing we’ve gone through earlier this year, it was pretty nice to see.

Our top technique for the weekend by far was slow trolling crawler rigs. Actually, that was the only technique we used the entire weekend. Why switch to something else when what your doing is working great?

Over the course of two days, five different clients boated 104 walleyes & saugers, plus several crappies in the 13-14" range. Of that total, 30 were legal size or bigger fish and the rest were shorts below the 15" size limit.

As many of you who fish Lake Wisconsin already know, we have had some great spawning success the past few years. Lake Wisconsin is definitely reaping the benefits of the current slot limit enacted back in 2002.

The future definitely looks bright if you like to fish for walleyes & saugers on this beautiful body of water.

  2. Joel, great job on getting a fantastic weekend put together “Why switch to something else when what your doing is working great?” Don’t! Sure is fun when we get meal ticket dialed in and the fish are cooperating with the offering! Great report!

  3. Hey Joel !!!

Hows the water level up there ?

After a very busy past couple of weeks am preping for my pool and were about 5 feet over normal…

    Great report buddy !!

  4. Dave,

Water levels are great! Nice and steady.

We’re at or even a little below normal flow rates for this time of the year. (between 3,000-5,000cfs)

There are no big storms heading our way or more importantly, north of our area so I don’t see any reason why our flows would change anytime soon either.

  5. Good report Joel. Thanks for sharing. I knew all of those shorts we got last year had to grow sometime. This has been a year of issues for me fishing. In the last two months, I’ve had to fix a hole in my hull, an electrical issue that effected every thing that uses electricity, a dying onboard charger, and a leaking live err dead well. I think I am ready now to get after it. See you on the water.

  6. Nice work Joel! It’s good to see all those smiles your your clients’ faces.

  7. Great report Joel! Looks like a fine bunch of fish. A few picture fish mixed in with a pile of eaters… it’s hard to beat that!
