Door County Smallmouth Action

Out on the water again today for another fishing adventure for Smallmouth bass. What an awesome day it was with the weather cooperating and the fish certainly cooperating just as well. With water temps this morning around 58 degrees we found fish a little picky but soon as the water began to warm the fish began to become very active.

We were catching fish on a variety of different presentations today including several different soft plastics including swimming grubs and a couple of different swim baits along with Rapala’s new Rippin Rap. This bait has really been a fantastic bait for me for many different species.

I began using this bait earlier this spring for Walleyes and it has been so productive it has really been hard to put down. This bait can be used in so many different ways including ripping it off the bottom or straight retrieves or long pumps letting the bait settle before pumping the bait again. When fish hit this bait they really try to kill it not to mention this bait casts a mile on super lines and you are always in direct contact with the bait and in such control you can actually feel fish disrupting the swim action of the lure chasing around the bait before striking it.

Water temps warmed to around 62 to 63 degrees in the afternoon and fish were very active. We caught most of our fish in 4 to 10 feet of water. There is still quite a few fish guarding beds but we do not disturb those fish we are targeting fish that are not engaged in spawning. With this weeks warming weather forecast fishing should continue to go strong. Good fishing and as always be safe.

You do have an awesome fishery to fish everyday, I have to get over to fish that boday of water again.

For those smallies…is it just a steady retrieve or jigging motion like your walleye report.
