Door County Smallmouth Action

Getting back out on the water chasing smallmouth bass yesterday it was nice to see some sun shine. With colder water temps sun is just what we needed to help warm the water back up. We started the day with some north west winds blowing around 10 to 15 MPH but it was not long and the winds began to die and soon we had flat calm water.

When fishing shallow gin clear water the wind can be your best friend as long as it is not blowing 40 MPH. The wind helps break up visibility and creates noise and shallow water fish become much less spooky. So being faced with flat calm water we had to have a stealthy quiet approach to our targeted areas.

The positive side to the calm water and warm sunshine was that as the day went on the water began to warm up quite a bit which had a lot of fish moving into the shallows. Our approach was to dial the trolling motor down as slow as we could go being very quiet and making very long casts to target fish that were far away from the boat.

With many fish occupying beds right now those were not fish we were targeting we were fishing for fish that were not engaged in spawning. With the calm clear water it was really cool to see fish following baits many fish did not commit to taking the baits but many fish did right in sight which was an awesome site to see. Back after them tomorrow for another adventure. Good luck fishing and as always be safe.
