Iron Range Walleye Report

The action up here on the iron range has been pretty fast and furious in the old green crestliner! I have been fortunate enough to spend almost every day for the past 3 weeks hopping around to different area lakes. There has been some good days and some slower days but every outing has been a success with 3 new personal bests hitting the net!

The method that has worked best and put the biggest fish in the boat has been pitching jigs. Lighter weight heads such as 1/16 and 1/8 have been prefered even in high winds. We got all 3 of our big fish in huge wind or at sunset after a windy day. Drifting lindy rigs has also worked but only short and keeper fish are chewing meat. Chubs have been the best live bait producer for my boat by far.

We are searching all different locations for these fish and using my muskie mind in run- and- gunning for them. Some fish are still showing up in or close to spawning areas but most fish are on flats near the mouth of bays. Basically try any spot for 5 minutes then move on if you don’t mark or catch fish.

It has been a great transition moving into a new town and getting to live the good life! My friends have been great and we have already been able to share some awesome memories with many more to come. The rain has been falling almost every day lately but the fish don’t stop biting. So until my next report, keep fishing and enjoy your time on the water.

  1. Here are a few more photos from the past 2 weeks. I don’t have the internet at home yet but I will be getting a Library card soon so I can keep updated on the world wide web and idofishing.

  2. A.J. – Prime time slime time? Those are some pretty serious walleyes for a lover of all things esox! Congrats on the tankers, and thanks for sharing.

What were you looking at for water temperatures up there? Lots of bait up shallow where you were pitching?

  3. Thanks for the great feed back everybody. I am truely blessed to be living the life i do up here in gods country!

The bait I have been seeing has been in 10ft. or deeper water. In some cases it is 32ft. down… We have been jumping around lakes so much it differs from lake to lake.

Here are a few photos from this weekend of fishing with my mom and her fiance. We did pretty good on the walleyes and the crappies showed up last night making for an all around fun trip!

  4. Great to see you getting acclimated to your new surroundings. I see it doesn’t take a great stick like you very long to get on the fish! Nice work man, really glad things are going well for you up there.

  5. Congrats on your move and glad to hear that you are getting into some good fish.
