Jolly Roger Tackle Mille Lacs Report – May 19-20

It was another great weekend on the Big Pond. I was flying solo so my apologies for the lack of pictures this week (the first is a self portrait I caputured with my camera and tripod). My mission was to run and gun several spots to see what type of patterns are shaping up as I’ve got some tournaments coming up in the next 2 weeks.

Right now fish can be caught just about anywhere in the lake. On Saturday, I started out on some transition areas on the south end. I then moved out to my favorite gravel spots and then to the mudflats. I found consistent action everywhere, catching several in the 20-26 inch range. I didn’t find any heavy concentrations of slotters in these spots but did pick one up here and there.

Although spinners are my favorite tactic, I deployed a number of weapons this weekend including rigs, crankbaits and bobbers. All of these methods caught fish, but the spinner bite was more consistent and a better way to cover water and sample the sizes of fish holding in these areas. I typically run #3 blades on Mille Lacs which will catch everything from 6 inchers to the 29 inch trophies. Sunrise Craw was by far the best blade color of the weekend. The bugs are hatching pretty good right now and I think this blade looks a bit “buggy” which might have something to do with it

Next weekend/week I’ll be pre-fishing for the Cabela’s MWC Tournament on Mille Lacs which I’m joining forces on with fellow IDO Member GrainBeltEyes (Nate Gilkey). I’ll check back in with a report upon my return.

Best of Fishing,

  1. Thanks for the report Shawn! Glad to hear that fish are being caught all over the lake. Good luck fishing the MWC!

  2. Shawn…
I have yet to put together a blade bait bite down here on the river… I love your rigs and I am planning a trip to Mille Lacs with my family in July… I will no doubt be running them on the lake… I may need to pick your brain a bit before I get up there though as I am very green at pulling these rigs..

Keep up the reports and good fishing !!
