Pool 4 Report from 4/13 to 4/27

I’m late with this report due to technical difficulties…But for those who like to track the Spawning actvities, or appreciate some info/pics here you go (finally)
The first week of the 37th Yooper P-4 visit brought us cold, rainy, windy days and many FLW contestants prefishing every inch of the pool. My plan was to concentrate on shallow shoreline eddies and flats adjacent to current seams.
My 3rd cast with a 1/4oz blade was slammed by a large fish…after a full 3-4 mins of deep, boring, headshaking runs, my partner Mark (an experienced walleye fisherman) lets out a gasp as a huge walleye approaches the net… Tom! this thing has got to be 32 inches! I am in the front and only see a broad flash of white belly and gold/green…inches from the net rim the unimaginable happens…she does the open mouth desperation roll and…is GONE…I still cant get that out of my mind…
Moments later, some distance downstream, the same scenario for Mark only I manage to get this SOW into the net…29.5″ and 11.4 lbs. Mark was fishing a diminuitive St. Croix AVS 59MXF with 6# Sufux 832 Ghost…working a 1/4 oz blade.

We drift the Y and vertical jig both blades and Ptails, marking scattered fish and picking up a few Sauger. After moving past the knot of tourney boats we return to some rip rap and I start casting a chart/green/gold 3/16 hair jig (one of my own)…Soon it gets belted and the battle ensues… My LC Smoothie wins this battle and a nice spawned out 29″ female gets her picture taken. She weighed a tad over 9 lbs.

Now the guy in my old red stormhide is Mel. Mel and Mark are my friends and members in my church. Mel is a stream trout guy and hasn’t fished Walleyes for over 25 years. It took a couple days but Mel caught on to casting blades. This was one of 5 dandy walleyes he caught our last two days. What a way to get back to walleye fishing! 29.75″ of spawned out walleye…just under 10 lbs.

It was Paul’s 2nd trip to p-4… coming last November. Pauls PB walleye came on a Perch colored blade on Thursday during the rain. He immediately motored back to Everts to get it weighed…It was still with spawn…29″ and weighed 11.03lbs. The walleye was gill hooked and is headed for the taxidermist…
Our second week was blessed by balmy, sunny weather but the post spawn just crushed our walleye bite…We still had a ball with lots of big White Bass, Smallies, Cats, Carp, and even some nice Crappie. Pictures in my next reply…

tackle used;
St Croix LX69MLXF
Limit Creek LMS69 MLF
Limit Creek LMS66 MF

Blades in Chart or Perch
Ringworms/Moxies Chart/green core or Purple/chart tail
Hair jigs really took off the 2nd week… bright colors

  1. I can feel your pain on the one that got away. We’ve all been there and it’s an anguishing feeling that is not quick to go away. Hard to complain though with some of those beauties that were landed. Nice job!

  2. Great report Tom!! Great pix of some awesome fish. It was also very nice to meet you! I’ll send pix of my V’s soon.

  3. A friend and mine have never fished the river before. We were looking at going out of Everts because of all of the comments made on this site. What techniques would you use if you were new to the river and just wanted to find fish (Walleye BK). Is the dam our best bet? Also if my friend only has a MN license we have to stick to me minnesota half of the river correct.

    Thanks for the help.

    Tony
