With night fishing in full swing and being on the night on an almost daily basis it was nice to get out again for an early morning fishing trip. We left the boat ramp just before 8am and headed out to jig for some walleyes and Northern Pike. With water temps in the high 40 degree range most of the walleyes are all post spawn at this time.
We were fishing both hair jigs and also jigging with soft plastics the 4 inch moxies to be exact. Also behind the boat I was running two rods with succer minnows on three way rigs. Shortly after arriving we had our first fish take a succer minnow on a cirle hook but the fish came off after a very short battle. When using circle hooks hook placement is crucial for proper hook ups.
Shortly after missing our first fish our next fish came on a jig which was a very nice 28 inch walleye which was reids first walleye not bad for his first walleye. Our next fish came on a three way rig which was a pretty decent Northern Pike that decided to go bananas at boat side with an end result of a broken line.
Our next fish was a beautiful Lake Trout followed by another really nice walleye. Our walleyes were really showing a preference for color they only would eat purple jigs and we tried many different colors. Not too much after our Walleye-Lake Trout catch Reid caught another Walleye close to the same size. I was really hoping to boat a nice size Northern Pike to finish off our grand slam of Walleye Lake Trout and Pike but we just could not get that pike in the boat we had one more Pike shred up a succer minnow but no hook up. We all had a very enjoyable morning on the water and we caught some nice fish.
