Walleye are still going on the Menominee River

another cold morning on the river…wind chill in the low 20s. The full moon reminded us that we should have left home at 2 AM rather than 4 AM…Pete shut the big motor off at 6 AM and I dropped a jig/paddletail combo into the dark 22 foot depths…we were slowly drifting downriver, keeping our jigs just off the bottom and giving them a 8-10" lift every 30-40 seconds. BAM! something grabbed the jig hard! Moments later a nice 24" postspawn walleye succumbed to Pete’s net…Hey, I am ahead of Pete 1-0…thats unusual with him up front…

I had just released my fish when Pete’s rod went into a deep bow… Well…as I put the net under a clone of mine… Two fish in less than 5 min is the start of a good day! We quickly caught two more chunky 16-17" males and were happy campers. There were only a handful of trailers in the parking lot. The browns were starting to move into the shoreline and I suspected the other boats were out trolling for browns

It was soon 5-3 in our friendly CPR walleye match when the HDS 7 lit up with some nice hooks…One of them, a 26" postspawn female was pulled up by Pete and he started to put the smack down on me…I closed the gap with two more 17-18 inchers when the sun came out brilliantly…and the Walleye simply vanished

after 2 fruitless hours we pulled out of the cold breeze into a sheltered rip rap area. It looked so "fishy" that I couldn’t resist tying a jig/ringworm on my 66MF Limit Creek rod (which I have decided is never going back to Mr. Turk Gierke) Sorry Turk!

looking for possible shallow walleye. I was only a few reel turns into my

retreive when I had a sharp “tap” on the line…It fought deep and strong, headshaking like a big walleye. When it came to the net we were both amazed at the girth and broad

shoulders of the mega smallie!

I will post a seperate report on the Bass forum with additonal pictures…

All in all we had a great start, but the bright sun coupled with the dam flow shutting down send us soon home after the big bass…

Lots of good river fishing left…see ya on the water!
