Pool 9 Spring Run Walleyes II

Well,as my week of vacation comes to an end.. I’m looking back at what a great resource the Sippi is. Year after year the male walleyes come to do their part in keeping the walleye population what it is today… Even though mother nature tries to throw a curve ball, the eyes seem to succeed in their quest to fertilize the female eggs….

I sent out some invites to join me in this past weeks handline outing for some fantastic walleye action and the eyes were very cooperative…
The flow is considerably lower this year then I can remember in some time… Normally I use 2 to 3 pound weights to fight the current, keeping the various crank baits in the fish zone. But this year I have been using 1-1/4 pound to keep the baits in the proper position.
Speed this year had a lot to do with boating more walleyes as well.. I was running .3 to .5 and I was not hooking up with the fish that my locator was showing me.. So I sped things up to .8 to 1.2 and that made a lot of difference.

Cranks of all colors are needed to keep the fish coming to the boat… Two mail styles of cranks I use have been the Original Floating Rapala and the J-7 Floating Rapala.. These two cranks in a array of colors will put plenty of eyes tugging on the line in your hand.

It’s fun to get some custom painted cranks and have names for them… Vikings Cheerleader, Grape Ape, Orange you glad were fishing, and then there are the original purchased off the shelf colors too… pics here are what I was using to pull fish on Saturday.

It’s all fun and games…. Great time on the water… Memories that the pictures will help me remember for ever… I look forward to this time each year…
If you have never worked baits by hand, you owe it to yourself to find a friend with the gear, offer your experience to a friend or hire a guide and take in the male run of walleyes and you will have a blast !!!

Back to work for me this next week… there is still a lot of bite left out there !!

  2. Sounds like a great week. Thanks for the reports.

I can only imagine the names we could come up with if we painted and named our own.

  3. Nice report Dave!
Great job on finding those large schools of post spawn walleyes and figuring out what it takes to put some fish fries in the boat.
Sounds like you really made the most out of your weeks vacation.
